About this Cycle Tour

The Bolivian Andes are a high-altitude adventure paradise unlike anywhere else in South America. Yes, there are majestic snow-capped peaks and cheeky llamas. But you’ve also got Lake Titicaca – the world’s highest navigable body of water – and the Uyuni Salt Flats, the largest salt desert on the planet. And wherever we go, gritty trails await thrill-seeking mountain bikers.

On this 11-day tour, we take Bolivia’s loveably chaotic city of La Paz as our base and venture into the all-surrounding mountains and the vast plains of the Altiplano. The adventure has been structured around three unmissable highlights:

  • The Sacred Lake: Cycle on waterfront trails and cruise out to islands which stand at the centre of Incan cosmology.
  • The Salar de Uyuni: Ride across the infinite white crust of the Uyuni Salt Flats and unwind in a remote lodge at the base of a dormant volcano.
  • The Great Andean Descents: Tackle a series of incredible downhills, including the legendary “Yungas Road” which, dropping 4,000 metres from the Andes to the edge of the Amazon, is in a league of its own.

Join us and discover Bolivia’s unfiltered beauty by bike!

Itinerary

Day 1

We meet in La Paz, where you should already have arrived a day or two before in order to acclimatise to living at 3,650 metres ASL. Today we convene at our tour hotel in the afternoon for a bike fitting, briefing and welcome dinner.

Day 2

We drive to Lake Titicaca and spend the morning on trails hugging the deep blue waters of the world’s highest navigable body of water. In the afternoon, we descend to the laid-back town of Copacabana and visit its grand basilica.

Day 3

Leaving our bikes on dry land, we cruise to discover the islands of the Moon and Sun, once believed to be the centre of the Inca universe. Highlights include the ruins of Iñak Uyu, the Inca Steps, and a traditional apthapi lunch.

Day 4

We drive back into the heart of the Bolivian Andes and tackle the Loma Loma Trail, an epic downhill mountain biking feat. The scenery transitions from the high-Andean steppe (puna) in the shadow of glaciated peaks to the lush, subtropical Sorata valley.

Day 5

Get ready for another great Andean descent. After our drive up to Mount Chacaltaya at 5,228 m, we roll down steadily into the heart of La Paz, swapping remote, twisty trails for bustling city streets all within the span of 40 km.

Day 6

We fly south to the unmissable Uyuni Salt Flats. From the comfort of a 4x4 vehicle, we zip across the blinding white surface of the world’s largest salty desert, visit the train cemetery, and spend a cosy night at the base of Tunupa Volcano.

Day 7

Today we cycle across the infinite white crust of the Salar, one of South America’s most unique cycling experiences. Our route leads to an oasis of giant cacti in the middle of the flats and ends with a drive to a hotel built out of, you guessed it, salt.

Day 8

We fly back to La Paz for a free day of exploring, lounging, and dining at your own pace.

Day 9

It’s time to tackle South America’s most legendary unpaved descent. The Yungas Road is in a league of its own, coiling down from nearly 5,000 m in the High Andes to below 1,500 m ASL in the lush cloud forest at the edge of the Amazon.

Day 10

We cap off our adventure with a short but thrilling downhill ride from rim to river in the Palca Canyon. The afternoon is free in La Paz before reconvening for a farewell dinner.

Day 11

Transfer to the airport for your onward flight, or take the chance to extend your stay and explore more of this remarkable country.
