Greenland is the final frontier for the self-propelled explorer. As the world’s largest island, it offers a scale of wilderness that is increasingly rare, characterised by massive ice sheets, deep-blue fjords, and a lack of traditional interconnected road networks. A new chapter of Arctic cycling is emerging: one which utilises rugged backcountry tracks, connects with small coastal settlements, and places riders in a landscape of prehistoric beauty where the silence is only broken by the sound of calving glaciers.

In place of paved highways, much of Greenland’s accessible terrain is navigated via 'hundeslædeveje'—traditional dog sledge tracks. During the summer months, these tracks serve as the primary land routes through the tundra and glacial valleys. For the cyclist, these rugged, unpaved double-tracks offer a tactile connection to the landscape. Riding here requires an appreciation for raw elements and the ability to navigate natural contours where the lack of infrastructure provides a sense of absolute freedom.

A cornerstone of local hospitality is the 'kaffemik'. This traditional Greenlandic social gathering is an open-house celebration held in local homes to mark milestones like birthdays or first hunts. It is a central part of the social fabric in isolated settlements, where coffee and home-baked food are shared among neighbours and visitors. Understanding the kaffemik is essential to understanding the warmth and resilience of the Inuit culture in an environment defined by its extreme Arctic conditions.
Fun fact: Greenland is home to the Northeast Greenland National Park—the world's largest national park. It covers 972,000 square kilometres, making it larger than most countries in the world.
