About this Cycle Tour

Kazakhstan is defined by tectonic scale, endless horizons, and a proud nomadic heritage. This 9-day mountain bike tour takes us across the country's southeast, where the highland steppe gives way to dramatic canyons and alpine meadows in the shadow of the Tien Shan — the “Celestial Mountains.” We cycle on crunchy trails, encounter herds of horses, and sleep under a vast, starry night sky.

Starting from Almaty, we warm up with a ride across the steppe before weaving through weathered, red-hued hills into the Charyn River Canyon. This labyrinth of sheer sandstone walls and bizarre rock formations is a stunning display of nature’s artistry. After a hike through the iconic “Valley of the Castles,” we rise into the highlands for three days of remote cycling through valleys filled with green pastures, braided rivers, and montane lakes. We camp on riverbanks and on the shores of Tuzkol, a salt lake reflecting the pyramidal peak of Khan Tengri, the country’s highest point. Our riding concludes by coiling up and over the iconic Ketmen Pass, followed by a well-earned soak in thermal hot springs. We return to Almaty for a final celebratory evening before airport drop-offs.

Join us and embrace Kazakhstan’s nomadic spirit for an unforgettable bike adventure!

Itinerary

Day 1

We meet at our tour hotel in Almaty for a trip briefing and welcome dinner.

Day 2

We leave the city and visit the ancient burial mound complex of Kazakhstan’s beloved “Golden Man”. Then it’s on the bikes for our first ride, following the Great Almaty Canal through dry steppe and lush orchards framed by snow-capped mountains. We spend the night in the village of Bayseit.

Day 3

The majority of today’s ride takes us on off-road tracks in the “Red Mountains”, a Martian terrain of weathered slopes and deep gullies. We then cycle into the Charyn Canyon National Park, home to one of Kazakhstan’s most stunning geological marvels, where we spend the night.

Day 4

At the crack of dawn, we hike into Charyn Canyon’s striking sandstone formations. The rest of the day is in the saddle as we transition from barren plateaus to green alpine meadows of the Tien Shan mountains. Tonight, we camp under the stars by the Kensu River.

Day 5

We climb onto the Kegen Plateau, a high-altitude steppe where herds of horses and Bactrian camels roam the vast grasslands. We take an unhurried pace to soak in the wide, open scenery and, in the evening, unwind at our camp nestled in a loop of the Kegen River.

Day 6

We ride past the oxbow coils of the Kegen River toward the village of Shalkode before finishing at Tuzkol, a salty montane lake. Its glassy waters reflect a panorama of the snow-capped Tien Shan Range with the pyramidical peak of Khan Tengri centre stage. Enjoy the views from our campsite.

Day 7

We cross the Shalkode Valley’s braided rivers before tackling the iconic Ketmen Pass. A 15 km climb leads to a glorious 20 km descent, plunging from alpine meadows into sunbaked gorges. We then transfer to the Chundzha Hot Springs, trading our saddles for thermal pools in the wild steppe.

Day 8

We transfer back to Almaty with time in the afternoon for exploring or last-minute shopping. In the evening, we meet for a farewell dinner.

Day 9

Transfer to the airport for your flight home or discover more of Central Asia.
