About this Cycle Tour

Albania, North Macedonia and Greece meet in a region once known as Epyrus, where the lakes are among Europe’s deepest, the mountains soar above the rushing rivers, and the Ionian Sea gleams like an opal in the golden sun. Challenging and exhilarating roads wind seamlessly through these diverse landscapes, bringing us to the essence of the land and its people. Civilizations from prehistory and onward to the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans and Ottomans have thrived here. These layered influences come through in the traditional food, wine, arts, and architecture of Kastoria, Përmet, Gjirokastër, Sarandë and other destinations that will greet us during and after remarkable days on the bike. This is a sublime road cycling adventure where every day brings us to inspiring new heights!

Meet your guide in Tirana, the scenic and lively capital of Albania, for a welcome dinner in the city centre. The next morning, cycle into North Macedonia on a ridgetop frontier road to Peshkopi. We then reach the shores of Lake Ohrid, whose depths have given rise to hundreds of unique species. After staying the night beside this natural wonder, we ride across Galičica Mountain to Lake Prespa and then on to Kastoria, Greece, for a magical evening in this city perched on a promontory above Lake Orestiada. The next day, switch to riverside riding with a steady climb before a push to the summit of Nea Kotili at +1450 m above sea level. A fantastic descent brings us into Konitsa, a historic town that is a microcosm of the region's diverse influences and warm hospitality. Crossing once more into Albania, we will reach the thermal waters of Benje and later Përmet, the perfect place to browse artisanal products and try local wine and raki. Gjirokastër’s Ottoman architecture next provides a counterpoint to the pristine beauty of the Syri i Kaltër natural park, and we spend a night in the vibrant port of Sarandë. The final ride takes us high above the stunning bays and cliffsides of the Ionian Coast, culminating in the Llogara Pass with views over the sea 1000 m below. We will celebrate with a final dinner in the ancient city of Berat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a fitting culmination to this extraordinary cycling journey!

Join us on this 9-day road cycling tour and uncover this region's timeless, enchanting beauty!

Itinerary

Day 1

Upon arrival, settle in and explore colourful, lively Tirana, with its cafes and shops set amid eclectic architecture from different eras. Later, meet for dinner in the city centre and prepare for the cycling adventure ahead!

Day 2

After transferring east of Tirana, we begin our first ride in Borovë, following a ridgeline parallel to the North Macedonian border. Take breaks in small villages along the route with striking views over the frontier. Our destination is Peshkopi, a dynamic town known for its thermal baths and mountain sports.

Day 3

Descend from Peshkopi and reach the North Macedonian border. An undulating road leads to Lake Debar, then onwards to the ancient town of Struga on Lake Ohrid. One of Europe’s oldest and deepest lakes, Ohrid is a natural marvel with over 200 endemic species. We’ll spend the night in a charming town on its shores.

Day 4

Start the day with lakeside cycling, then climb 1000 m across Galičica Mountain, a vast natural park between Lakes Ohrid and Prespa. Emerge from the mountains and enter rural Albania once again. Crossing the Greek border, we will spend the night amid the beautiful Byzantine architecture of Kastoria, built on a promontory above Lake Orestiada.

Day 5

Begin the day with a gradual climb from Lake Orestiadna, then ascend to lofty Neo Kotili. Take in the views and enjoy the downhill joyride of 50 km to Konitsa, a small, historic town at the confluence of the Aoos and Voidomatis Rivers. For dinner, we’ll sample delicious foods from the region.

Day 6

Ride above densely-wooded hills above rushing rivers, reaching the Greek-Albanian border near a famous WWII battleground. Follow the Vjosa River with a traditional lunch along the way, ending with a dip in the thermal baths of Benje. On arrival in Përmet, browse artisans’ shops, try local wines, and choose your restaurant for dinner.

Day 7

Ascend to a panoramic road and reach Gjirokastër, with its castle and Ottoman-era bazaar. After the steep climb over the Muzina Pass, arrive at Syri i Kaltër National Park, a natural wonder with a vibrant blue spring. Reach the Ionian Coast in Sarandë and explore the waterfront promenades of this historic port.

Day 8

Ride rugged hill country with awe-inspiring views over azure waters. Old stone streets beckon in Dhërmi, a jewel of the Albanian Riviera. Cycle up the Llogara Pass, soaring to dramatic viewpoints to cap off this cycling adventure. Tonight, we will celebrate our journey in style in the beautiful UNESCO heritage site of Berat.

Day 9

This morning, we will depart by a group transfer of approximately 2-2.5 hours. You can choose your drop-off point: at Tirana’s Rinas Airport (TIA) for onward flights, or Tirana’s city centre, if you prefer to linger in Albania!
