About this Cycle Tour

Türkiye is literally layered with history – civilizations built one atop the other have left unmistakable marks on the landscapes of the Anatolian peninsula. Instead of turning pages in a history book, on this 10-day adventure we turn corners on a bike from the heart of ancient Cappadocia to the Turkish Riviera on the Mediterranean coast.

Chapter 1: Ancient Cappadocia. We spend four days cycling, hiking, and dining in this iconic region of otherworldly ‘fairy chimneys’, filled with rock-cut churches and underground cities. Beyond the must-sees of Derinkuyu, Soğanlı Valley, and Göreme, we venture deep into the rugged countryside that most tourists only see from above in a hot air balloon.

Chapter 2: Spiritual Konya. By day 5 we reach the city of Konya, home to a beautiful medieval mosque, the domed tomb of the world’s most revered Islamic poet, and delicious Etli Ekmek – a ridiculously long flatbread.

Chapter 3: The Road to Lake Beyşehir. Riding across the vast, open expanse of the Anatolian Plateau, we stop at a 3,000-year-old Hittite stone monument before arriving on the shores of Lake Beyşehir, Türkiye’s largest freshwater lake.

Chapter 4: The Taurus Mountains. On Day 7, the terrain changes dramatically as we climb into the rocky peaks and forested wilderness of the Taurus Mountains. We spend the night in a traditional ‘button house’ and explore a fabled underground lake by boat.

Chapter 5: ‘Mare Nostrum’ – The Roman Mediterranean. Descending gloriously to the coastal plains, we base ourselves in the ancient port city of Side for the final two nights. We ride past and explore the temples, theatres, and aqueducts of the Romans, who once held total control over the Mediterranean Sea. The tour ends with a transfer to Antalya, the gateway to the Turquoise Coast.

Itinerary

Day 1

We meet at our tour hotel in Kayseri, the gateway to Cappadocia, for a trip briefing and welcome dinner.

Day 2

Our first ride takes us along the farm-studded banks of the Red River and the sun-drenched hills of the Anatolian plateau. Off the bikes, we explore the Özkonak Underground City, see the iconic "fairy chimneys" in Monks Valley, and ramble through the rock-cut dwellings of Zelve.

Day 3

Rise early for an optional hot air balloon ride (not included) before a ground-level exploration of Cappadocia's legendary landscapes by bike. A hilly route takes us between lush valleys to discover Byzantine-era Christian monasteries and churches etched into the cliffs at Keşlik and Soğanlı

Day 4

In the morning we ride on quiet roads in the countryside before relieving our muscles at a traditional Turkish bathhouse. The afternoon is dedicated to the UNESCO-recognised cave churches of Göreme and the crimson-hued ridges of the Red Valley, followed by an authentic dinner in a village house.

Day 5

A bike-free day to discover the remarkable Derinkuyu Underground City before driving across the Anatolian plateau to the city of Konya. Along the way, we stop to visit the Valley of Monasteries, have lunch at a winery, and hike through the Ihlara Canyon.

Day 6

We start with a walking tour of Konya, home to a beautiful medieval mosque and the tomb of Rumi, a revered Islamic poet. Back in the saddle, we ride across the Anatolian plateau to reach an ancient Hittite stone monument before reaching the scenic lakeside town of Beyşehir.

Day 7

We visit Beyşehir’s UNESCO-listed wooden mosque before a short transfer into the Taurus Mountains. Cycling through a wilderness of pine forests and limestone ridges, we tackle some memorable descents and ascents before reaching the highland village of Ormana. We spend the night in a traditional 'button house'.

Day 8

We cycle into Altınbeşik Cave National Park to explore Türkiye’s largest underground lake by boat. After a challenging mountain pass, a glorious 28 km descent leads toward the Mediterranean. We visit Manavgat Waterfall before finishing the day among the ancient Roman ruins of the coastal city, Side.

Day 9

Our final ride takes us through the countryside surrounding the Köprüçay River. We cycle past citrus fields and the remnants of Roman aqueducts before peeking into the delicate Zeytintaş Cave. Post-lunch we explore the magnificent Roman Theater of Aspendos and return to Side for our farewell dinner.

Day 10

The tour ends with a morning transfer to Antalya, the gateway to the Turkish Riviera for those looking to hit more beaches and home to a well-connected international airport (AYT) for those flying out.
