About this Cycle Tour

Madrid to Lisbon is an iconic cycling trip connecting two fabled capital cities via stunning and dynamic routes. Experience the full bouquet of sensations that the Iberian Peninsula brings forth on two wheels: mountain breezes scented with pine and cork; flavours of tapas, paella and bacalao; aromas of bold Spanish reds and vintage Port; the rumble of your wheels on medieval cobbles as you roll into ancient town squares; and views to rugged wilderness and sparkling seas from our spectacular accommodations. Test your legs on famed passes featured on the Vuelta a España, and explore remote mountain roads that lead us to atmospheric fortified villages and breathtaking summits of the Sierra. This is a journey into the very essence of these contrasting nations, from the grandiose Old World towns to the rugged beauty of the Sierra and the Atlantic Coast, making for countless impressions and unforgettable stories from the road!

Leaving regal Madrid, we will enter rolling foothills full of fresh, invigorating air sweeping down from the Sierras. Warming up our legs and becoming attuned to the Spanish countryside, we soon encounter our first taste of steep climbing as we enter the real mountains. The following days, we will conquer iconic passes such as the Puerto del Tremedal and the Peña de Francia, but also explore quiet, remote roads that take us deeper into the wilderness. The climbing ratchets up, but so does the jaw-dropping scenery and the cultural interest, as we ride past Roman aqueducts, imposing medieval fortresses, and immaculately-kept villages within this pristine mountain landscape, staying in accommodations each night that offer complete relaxation and access to the local life of each region. The sixth day, we will rest our legs and enjoy all that the historic and cultural centre of La Alberca has to offer off the bike, with the chance to rejuvenate at the spa in our resort. Resuming our ride, we approach the frontier, riding between stone hamlets and walled towns, among oak groves and sheep meadows, then enter the wild beauty of Portugal, reaching the highest point on its mainland, Torre, on our ninth day. Slowly emerging from the mountains through the tranquil backcountry, we will have a dramatic encounter with the Atlantic coast on Day 11, venturing to mainland Europe's westernmost point, Cabo de Roca. Wonderful days of coastal riding leads to our finish and celebration in the elegant old city of Lisbon.
