About this Cycle Tour

Romania remains one of Europe’s most underrated road cycling destinations. In Transylvania, quiet mountain roads wind through medieval towns, Saxon villages clustered around fortified churches, wooded valleys, and high alpine passes framed by the Carpathian Mountains. The riding blends challenging climbs with more relaxed days and cultural visits, linking historic cities and UNESCO-listed sites into a ride-focused exploration of a region shaped by deep history and striking natural scenery.

After meeting in Bucharest, the journey begins with a transfer into Transylvania and a first night in the Saxon village of Cincșor, where bike fitting, a short warm-up ride, and a welcome dinner set the tone.

The riding builds early with an ascent of the legendary Transfăgărășan road, climbing directly from the hotel toward a high glacial lake before a long descent. The following day eases into rolling countryside en route to Sighișoara, a UNESCO-listed medieval town known for its preserved citadel and Gothic architecture, with time to explore in the evening. A moderate ride across the hills leads to Sibiu, Romania’s cultural capital, shaped by its Saxon heritage, elegant façades, and lively café culture. A loop ride from Sibiu explores surrounding villages, mountain resorts, and open-air heritage sites before returning to town.

The final cycling day brings the greatest challenge with the ascent of the Transalpina, Romania’s highest road, offering sustained climbing before a long descent to a traditional manor house for a final evening together.

Join us on this seven-day road cycling journey through the heart and high mountain roads of Transylvania.

Itinerary

Day 1

Meet in Bucharest or Brașov and transfer to the Saxon village of Cincșor, where the journey begins. We aim to arrive in time for a short warm-up ride through the surrounding countryside, followed by time to relax before our first group dinner.

Day 2

We ride out from Cincșor toward the Transfăgărășan, famously described by Top Gear as the world’s best alpine road, on an out-and-back route into the heart of the Făgăraș Mountains.

Day 3

Ride through the Transylvanian Highlands, passing the village of Cincu with its fortified church and quiet rural landscapes. Rolling roads unfold beneath the Carpathian Mountains as the backdrop for a scenic approach toward Sighișoara.

Day 4

Follow a quiet secondary road along the Hârtibaciu Valley, passing through Biertan, one of Transylvania’s most important Saxon villages with its UNESCO-listed fortified church. We continue into the historic town of Sibiu, named European Capital of Culture in 2012.

Day 5

A rewarding climb leads to Păltiniș, a historic mountain resort above Sibiu, followed by a long descent back into town and a visit to Sibiu’s Open Air Village Museum, one of the largest in Central and Eastern Europe.

Day 6

The final riding day tackles the Transalpina, Romania’s highest road and the queen stage of the week. After the climb and a long descent, we transfer to Măldărești for our final night and gather for a farewell dinner.

Day 7

The tour ends in Măldărești. You can transfer back to Bucharest, fly out of Sibiu, or extend your stay in the area.
