About this Cycle Tour

Morocco is one of the world's greatest gravel biking destinations. Offering the perfect blend of asphalt roads and rock-strewn backcountry tracks, the north African Kingdom invites riders to enter its ruggedly beautiful and storied landscapes. On this 10 day tour, we travel in the hoofsteps of ancient camel caravans and traverse Morocco’s remote mountains to the edge of the Sahara Desert by gravel bike!

Just like the merchants who once journeyed along the Trans-Saharan Trade Route, we begin our adventure in the bustling city of Marrakech. After driving east to the oasis town of Tinghir, the first cycling stage takes us through the wild cliffs of Todra Gorge and into the rural heart of the High Atlas foothills. After an epic climb into the Dades Valley, we coil down some of Morocco’s most iconic switchbacks and ride past crumbling kasbahs and lively Berber villages. Our route then continues over the bone-dry Jbel Saghro, a deeply weathered mountain range with red-stone massifs that gradually fade into desolate plateaus. The last stage brings us into the Draa Valley, a green ribbon of date palms and a final frontier of civilization at the gates of the unforgiving Saharan sands. Before returning to Marrakech, we visit a picturesque sand dune and explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ait Benhaddou, an ancient fortified village built out of mudbrick. The tour ends in Marrakech with a celebratory dinner and a final night in the city.

Join us on this novel gravel biking adventure à la Morocco!

Itinerary

Day 1

We meet at our tour hotel in Marrakesh for a trip briefing, bike fitting and welcome dinner.

Day 2

We drive 6-7 hours from Marrakesh to reach Tinghir, the starting point of our biking adventure located within an expansive, palm-filled oasis in southeastern Morocco. The journey offers an introduction to the varied terrain we will explore by bike over the next 5 days.

Day 3

Our inaugural ride is a challenging ascent through the Todra Valley. In under 40 km, the scenery dramatically shifts from the lush oasis of Thinghir to the sheer cliffs of the Todra Gorge, and finally, the remote, windswept High Atlas foothills where we overnight in a Berber village.

Day 4

The day begins with 26 km of climbing to reach the top of a pass in the High Atlas. Then it’s a sensational downhill into the Dades Valley where we ride past breathtaking gorges, mountain peaks, weathered escarpments, mudbrick Berber villages, and farm-studded oases.

Day 5

Today’s ride takes us further down the Dades Valley, cycling through a raw landscape of craggy bluffs and going down one of Morocco’s most iconic series of switchbacks. The second half takes us on beautiful gravel trails with mountain and oasis views en route to the town of Kalaat M'Gouna.

Day 6

A gloriously challenging gravel route takes us over the rock-strewn hills and weathered peaks of the Jbel Saghro Mountains. On the downhill leg, we witness a transformation to the pre-Saharan semi-desert plateaus and spend the night in the oasis town of N’Kob with its many rammed earth kasbahs.

Day 7

The last stage brings us from the frontiers of Morocco’s mountains into the beginnings of the vast Sahara Desert. Our ride ends in Zagora which, sitting in the lush Draa Valley, was once the last major staging post for caravans embarking on the arduous trans-Saharan journey to Timbuktu.

Day 8

With five epic days of cycling behind us, we begin our two-day return road trip to Marrakesh. Today we visit the Tinfou Dunes for a taste of the Sahara before driving north to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ait Benhaddou – an ancient fortified village – where we spend the night.

Day 9

We transfer back to Marrakesh with time in the afternoon for exploring or last-minute shopping. In the evening, we meet for a farewell dinner.

Day 10

Extend your stay to discover more of Morocco or head to the airport for your onward flight.
