About this Cycle Tour

Java and Bali are two precious jewels in the resplendent chain of the Indonesian archipelago. Cycling these volcanic isles transports us across a dazzling diversity of landscapes and cultures, from the millenium-old temples of Yogyakarta to the sublime slopes of Bali, steeped in Hindu spirituality. A mix of challenging climbs and rolling coastal joyrides, weaving together pristine beaches, soaring mountains, and ancient cities full of energy and evocative heritage, this road bike adventure will imprint itself on the memory in vivid colours.

We start from Yogyakarta, in the heart of Java. The 9th century temple of Borobudur is the starting point of our first ride. From here, we'll proceed eastward across the island, taking the optimal cycling routes and alternating between the serene, sparsely-populated southern shore, with resorts overlooking black sand beaches and rocky cliffs, and the gigantic volcanoes of the interior, where we find larger urban hubs and stay in centrally-located hotels to feel part of the action. Entering eastern Java, we'll take winding jungle roads and stay at an eco-resort that showcases traditional agriculture. We then cross the strait to Bali by ferry, cycling the northern shore before tackling the imposing climbs up to the island's sacred peaks and volcanic calderas. Finally, we descend to the enchanting town of Ubud, the perfect milieu to cap off our epic cycling journey.

Join us on this 13-day road cycling adventure that reveals the beauty of Java and Bali in full!

Itinerary

Day 1

Upon arriving in Yogyakarta, head to our hotel in the centre of town, and enjoy a walk around the city’s markets, historic districts, and museums. This evening, meet your guides for a welcome dinner and briefing about the journey ahead.

Day 2

Walk through majestic Borobudur temple and learn about this 9th century Buddhist edifice that was lost to the jungle for centuries. Take a scenic ride back to Yogyakarta, stopping off at other ancient temples Prambanan and Ratu Boko.

Day 3

Transfer out of Yokyakarta to our ride start, then climb amid rice fields and forests. Descend to the coast for 20 km, then ride an undulating coastal road to the surfing area and beach of Watu Karung, where we will stay at a beautiful resort.

Day 4

We depart from the resort on a challenging ride where you can decide how far you will go, depending on your appetite for distance and climbs. River valleys and views of coves are followed by a ride up a volcano to 900 m ASL. Finish with a nice descent into Trenggalek.

Day 5

Start the day with the locals, then leave town for another long ride with a little less climbing than the previous one. It’s a feast for the eyes, with a long sweeping ascent through the jungle taking us to views of distant peaks. Circling Mt. Kawi, we’ll have another fun descent into Malang.

Day 6

Take an easier ride today with some light climbing to start, then descend to the southern coast again. We’re in a remote seaside location here, with a windswept, rocky shoreline and scattered islands offshore. This is a serene location to unwind and perhaps enjoy the local seafood!

Day 7

Ride along the coast, then make your way inland through narrow roads surrounded by the sounds of the jungle and rushing streams, with periodic villages giving us nice break stops. End the ride at the awe-inspiring Tumpak Sewu Waterfall, a tiered cascade that flows down from Semeru, Java’s highest peak.

Day 8

We enter a more settled region of the island on today’s ride, with farming and fishing communities ushering us to the black sand beaches of the south-east. After a relaxing coastal stretch, turn north on a gentle climb up to the city of Jember, where we’ll stay in the middle of town.

Day 9

We’ll wind our way across rivers and around the volcanoes as we take an extended climb along a tree-lined road. Our destination is an eco-resort that features a dairy and plantation that were founded in the 1940s. Relax in the lush gardens, plunge into the pool, or have a massage in this soothing atmosphere.

Day 10

We ride to the ferry crossing on the eastern coast of Java, reaching the paradise of Bali! Making our way some distance along the northern coast, we reach a suitably idyllic resort with a glamping style that truly immerses us in the beauty of Bali from the start!

Day 11

Ride further along the coast of Bali, then begin a long climb to the waterfilled volcanic caldera called Buyan Lake. This grueling climb is rewarded by views over pristine jungle and lofty peaks. Our resort is perfectly placed on the mountainside, where we’ll watch the sun go down from the poolside terrace.

Day 12

Cycle along volcanic ridges with breathtaking views in every direction, reaching sacred Mt. Batur. At 1700 m, pause to take it all in, then descend to Ubud, a vibrant town of Hindu temples and quaint streets. We’ll gather in our traditionally-styled resort in town to celebrate our journey in a truly special atmosphere!

Day 13

After breakfast, we will say our goodbyes; from here, you can continue your stay in Ubud, explore other parts of Bali, or head to the Denpasar Airport for your departing flight, full of memories of this grand journey!
