About this Cycle Tour

It is not often in life that you can say you’ve cycled up, down, and around several volcanoes in just 10 days. But if you come to Ecuador with SpiceRoads this is exactly what happens! Stretching from the capital Quito to the edge of the Amazon basin, the “Avenue of Volcanoes” is a high-altitude world of giant cones, wind-swept ridges, sheer canyons, green valleys, and indigenous villages. This is a bucket list mountain bike tour designed for those who want to go remote without sacrificing comfort in the heart of the Ecuadorian Andes.

We begin in Quito with an acclimatisation ride on a traffic-free Sunday to discover Latin America’s best-preserved Spanish colonial old town. Then it’s into the great outdoors for six back-to-back riding days on a mix of dirt, gravel, singletrack, and rural roads. Early highlights include the mighty Cotopaxi Volcano, lush Andean patchwork farms clinging to the mountainsides, and the sacred crater lake of Quilotoa. We then unwind in the colourful highland town of Salinas de Guaranda before an epic descent from Chimborazo Volcano, the closest point on the planet to the sun. A final transition leads into the subtropical cloud forests surrounding Baños, the “Gateway to the Amazon”, before returning to Quito for a final night.

Itinerary

Day 1

Welcome to Quito, the high-altitude capital of Ecuador! We will pick you up from the airport and transfer you to our hotel in the city. In the evening, we gather for a trip briefing and our welcome dinner.

Day 2

Taking advantage of Quito’s car-free Sundays, today we explore the city by bike. Highlights include riding straight through the UNESCO-recognised Old Town, with its stunning 16th-century Spanish colonial architecture, and indulging in a chocolate tasting to discover the secrets of Ecuador's finest cacao.

Day 3

We transfer south into the raw wilderness surrounding the mighty Cotopaxi, one of the world’s highest active volcanoes. Our route takes us on cobbled paths, dirt roads, and single-track across fields of volcanic debris, before descending to a cosy highland lodge in the foothills.

Day 4

The day begins by coiling up and down the trails of the sacred mountain Guingopana. We then weave through lush Andean patchwork farms clinging to the slopes, stopping for lunch at a local family’s home before reaching a rural retreat in the village of Chugchilán.

Day 5

This morning, we visit the stunning crater lake of Quilotoa and begin our ride by descending along the edge of the Toachi River Canyon. The rest of the day follows part of the legendary Trans-Ecuadorian Bikepacking route to the secluded parish of Angamarca, where we spend the night.

Day 6

Today we take to the high ridges, riding on dirt trails and grassy tracks that rise and fall with the contours of the Central Sierra. The afternoon is spent in Salinas de Guaranda, a colourful little town renowned for its artisanal cheeses and chocolates.

Day 7

We drive up to Ecuador's highest motorable point at the base of Chimborazo volcano and relish in one of the country’s most spectacular downhills. By the end of the ride, from our beautiful hacienda for the night, we can look back at the mountain we just cycled down from.

Day 8

On our final ride, we venture to the very edge of the Avenue of Volcanoes, where the high paramos give way to the subtropical cloud forest sitting above the Amazon Basin. We roll into the vibrant town of Baños for a free afternoon of taffy, coffee, and craft beer.

Day 9

Before heading back to Quito, you have the choice of visiting the thundering Pailón del Diablo waterfall or soothing your muscles at a hot spring. After returning to the capital, we reconvene for a farewell dinner.
