About this Cycle Tour

The Ćiro railway carried its last train in the 1970s. We ride what it left behind, off the busy coast at Dubrovnik and inland into the karst of Bosnia and Herzegovina, into country most riders who come here never see. This is a week that starts and ends on the Adriatic but spends its heart across the border.

The line takes us first across Popovo Polje, a broad flat field where the Trebišnjica river sinks into the rock. We ride to Stolac, scattered with medieval stećci tombstones beneath a hilltop fortress, then to Blagaj, where the Buna river bursts from the foot of a cliff below an old Dervish lodge, and on into Mostar and its Ottoman bridge over the Neretva. A gentler day runs down the green Neretva valley, with a sheep-farm lunch and an optional canoe on the Trebižat. Then we turn back to the sea: ferries carry us to the Pelješac peninsula and its vineyards, and across to Korčula, a walled town that claims to be the birthplace of Marco Polo, before a final transfer returns us to Dubrovnik. We stay in a mix of hotels and family-run guesthouses, with one night in a former railway station on the line itself.

Join us on this two-country journey from the Adriatic into Bosnia and back to the islands.

Itinerary

Day 1

We gather in Dubrovnik, the walled city on the Adriatic, for a briefing, a bike fit and a welcome dinner. There is time to walk the marble streets and city walls before we leave the coast for the interior in the morning.

Day 2

We climb away from Dubrovnik and cross into Bosnia and Herzegovina, swapping the coast for open karst country. The day ends at Ravno, on the old Ćiro railway, where we sleep in one of its former stations, now a small hotel, with tomorrow's trail running past the door.

Day 3

We swap tarmac for gravel and ride the old Ćiro railway across the Popovo Polje karst, where the Trebišnjica river vanishes underground. The trail drops us into Stolac, an old town under a hilltop fortress, scattered with the medieval stećci tombstones the region is known for.

Day 4

Our biggest climbing day runs from Stolac over the Herzegovinian hills to Blagaj, where the Buna river bursts from the foot of a cliff below an old Dervish lodge. From there we drop to the Neretva and roll into Mostar, the Ottoman city gathered around the high stone arch of the Stari Most.

Day 5

The shortest and easiest day, mostly downhill along the green Neretva to Čapljina. After the ride we stop for lunch at a sheep farm, and the afternoon is free for an optional canoe trip down the clear Trebižat river.

Day 6

We ride back to the sea, crossing the flat Neretva delta to Ploče and into Croatia, then ferry over to the Pelješac wine peninsula. We climb its vineyard spine to Orebić and cross to Korčula, settling inside its medieval walls for the night.

Day 7

Our last ride loops around Korčula, through pine forests the Greeks once called 'Black Corfu' and vineyards of Pošip, ending at the walled town said to be Marco Polo's birthplace. Then we head back to Dubrovnik for a farewell dinner.

Day 8

After breakfast the tour ends in Dubrovnik, where it began. Stay on for more of the Dalmatian coast: the view from Mount Srđ, the car-free Elafiti islands, or the quiet harbour of Cavtat. Get in touch if you would like to extend your trip.
