About this Cycle Tour

Known among the Chinese as an exotic and mysterious territory for over two millenia, Hainan Island (which translates to “Island South of the Sea”) has taken on many guises over the centuries. These diverse strands have been woven into the island's current form as a vibrant cycling destination, a trove of natural treasures, and a focal point of deep cultural interest. Home to indigenous peoples who settled here in prehistoric times, the fertile island later became a site of exile for those who had fallen into disfavour with the mainland dynasties; it was a hinterland sometimes explored by wandering Buddhist monks. In the 20th century, Hainan was occupied by a succession of regimes under the Republic of China and the Japanese before Communist forces took control in 1950. Today’s Hainan is a prosperous special free trade zone and a tropical jewel where China hosts international conferences amid ecological sanctuaries that protect its jungle and marine beauty. Stunning beaches are studded with sparkling seaside resorts, providing us with the perfect waypoints for our cycling journey around this fascinating island.

We first meet for introductions and a bike fitting near Haikou, followed by dinner. The next day, we head westward on our first ride, following the northern coast past waterfalls and quaint villages for just under 100 km with some moderate climbing. The daily riding rhythm stays much the same throughout the tour, allowing for satisfying rides that also allow for us to take in the sights of the island and relax. Day 2’s hotel takes advantage of the natural hot springs where we can unwind, while Day 3 brings us to Yangpu Bay for a sense of the island’s port life. We visit sites from the island’s turbulent 20th century history along with ancient salt flats as we continue to explore the towns of the island’s west coast, then reach the beach paradise of the island’s southern region and the sleek modern city of Sanya. Our beachfront resorts allow us to soak in the sunshine and cool off in pools or the ocean after each day’s riding. The island’s biodiversity comes to the fore, with visits to botanical gardens, coconut forests, coral reef rehabilitation sites, and ancient aquaculture ports, all of which is expressed in the foods we try throughout our trip. The natural beauty is the backdrop for historic mansions and current space launch sites, showcasing the island’s modern dynamism and importance to China’s rise. Our final day brings us to the serene nature of Tongguling Peak and Mulan Bay, less-traveled regions of rugged beauty that are a fitting conclusion to our cycling journey. We celebrate with a final night dinner back at our hotel in Haikou, reflecting on the many memories of the tour.

Join us on this 10-day cycling tour around Hainan, truly a jewel of China’s southern seas!

Itinerary

Day 1

After landing at Haikou Meilan International Airport, we'll pick you up and bring you to the hotel. Unwind from your flight at this oceanfront property. Tonight, we'll gather for a welcome dinner.

Day 2

Cycle out of the hotel and ride along the island’s northwest coastline. Along the way, visit a 300-year-old farming village with heritage architecture and learn about local handicrafts and foods. Take a break at the beautiful Guyin Waterfall, then cycle to our resort for a soak in the hot springs.

Day 3

Cycle along white sands to the historic Lin’gao Cape, where Communist forces landed in 1950, then reach the unique volcanic rock formations of Longmen Jilang, a dramatic vantage point eroded over millennia by the crashing surf. Tonight, we will stay near Yangpu Port, where you can explore the town and seafood options!

Day 4

Today’s ride features diverse seaside landscapes, from millennium-old salt fields carved in the rock, to sandy beaches, and on to a scenic area that is also a memorial to the forced labourers of Hainan during the Japanese occupation. Reaching Dongfu, we will have the chance to walk through some local neighbourhoods surrounding our hotel.

Day 5

Transferring out of Dongfang, we cycle into idyllic landscapes of the southern coast, known as “China’s Hawaii.” White and golden beaches are watched over by gigantic white statues of the Lady Buddha as we reach the sleek modern city of Sanya, built to respect the region’s natural heritage, and our stunning seaside resort.

Day 6

Pedal through modern Sanya and take in its innovative urban design, built to complement the biodiverse region where rare species such as Chinese white dolphins have made a comeback. After passing through numerous protected areas, reach Xinglong, a cosmopolitan town known for its delicacies, such as coffee, fruit and spices.

Day 7

Visit Xinlong’s impressive botanical garden, then embark on a seaside ride with the chance to take a dip at the spectacular beaches! Hele brings its centuries of aquaculture to the fore, with red snapper, crab, shrimp, and more harvested from the seas sustainably. After sampling the seafood dishes, ride on to our spectacular seaside haven for the night.

Day 8

Watch the sunrise on the eastern coast, then pedal to the Cai Mansion, a gem of 1930s architectural fusion. The Dongjiao Coconut Forest reveals secrets of this vital crop before we reach Longlou, a space launch site. Keep your eyes open for rockets! Tonight, shift gears with a stay in the city centre, near the beach.

Day 9

Ride into the natural sanctuary around Tongguling Peak with its rare wildlife including the Hainan Gibbon. Pass coral reefs and mangrove forests en route to dramatic, windswept Mulan Bay, a lesser-traveled destination favoured by photographers and nature-lovers. Here, we end our cycling journey around Hainan and transfer to our seaside hotel for a final night celebration!

Day 10

This morning, take a taxi from your hotel to the airport, head into Haikou City to explore further, or stay by the sea for another night or two of relaxation!
