About this Cycle Tour

Northern Thailand is the country’s premier gravel biking destination. On this 11-day tour from Chiang Mai to the banks of the mighty Mekong River, we layer our tires with grit on the region's fabulous dirt and gravel trails before shaking it off with fast-paced zips on smooth, paved roads. We satisfy the craving for the burn on leg-testing climbs before relishing the thrill of wrist-clenching descents. We discover lush valleys and highlands filled with rice paddies, mango orchards, tea plantations, coffee farms, and teak trees while exploring a rich multi-cultural heritage shaped by Thai and hilltribe traditions.

Meeting in the city of Chiang Mai, the cultural capital of the north, the tour is divided into four main stages:

Stage 1: Valleys of the North. The first five days involve hopping across three broad valleys - Chiang Mai, Chiang Dao, and Fang – for some fabulous backcountry cycling. Highlights include long stretches of gravel tracks through rice fields and fruit farms, ascents and descents through wild greenery, and views over some of Thailand’s tallest mountains.

Stage 2: The Highlands. After a night at a riverside hotel in the town of Tha Ton, we coil our way up a well-paved road to the mountaintop village of Mae Salong, renowned for its oolong tea and Chinese heritage.

Stage 3: Chiang Rai. On Day 7, we rise and fall with the contours of hills covered in cornfields and follow the Mae Kok River to reach the iconic White Temple. We have a rest day in Chiang Rai, a charming city with plenty on offer to fill a relaxed day.

Stage 4: The Mekong. We ride through the backwaters of Chiang Rai Province to the famed Golden Triangle, where the borders of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos converge at the confluence of the Mekong River, which we follow south to end the tour in the sleepy border town of Chiang Khong.

Itinerary

Day 1

We meet at our tour hotel in Chiang Mai in the early afternoon. Our warm-up ride takes us along quiet roads by the Ping River, passing ancient ruins and longan fruit orchards. In the evening, we reconvene for a welcome dinner.

Day 2

A short transfer brings us north where we begin today’s ride on farmer lanes crisscrossing rice paddies. Then it’s onto minor paved roads to reach the shores of Mae Ngat Reservoir. A final section of backcountry cycling leads to a beautiful Buddhist temple around the corner from the day’s hotel.

Day 3

This morning we tackle a winding, 15 km climb through wild greenery, tea plantations, and Lahu villages. After a long downhill we then enter the Chiang Dao Valley, riding on backroads to our rural hotel. An optional 15 km ride takes us to the sacred Chiang Dao Caves.

Day 4

Today we relish a mixed-surface century ride across the Chiang Dao and Fang valleys. The morning includes climbing and glorious backcountry gravel & dirt tracks while the afternoon allows you to go at a leisurely pace on well-paved, mildly rolling minor roads.

Day 5

A shorter stage today, with the first half on paved minor roads passing orange groves and the second through plains filled with rice paddies on dirt and gravel trails. The afternoon is free to relax at our tranquil riverside hotel near the town of Tha Ton.

Day 6

Today we conquer one of northern Thailand’s most scenic ascents: the climb up Doi Mae Salong. The well-paved road coils up the mountainside past tea plantations and stunning views over the highlands of Chiang Rai Province. Mae Salong is renowned for its Chinese heritage, tea, and cool air.

Day 7

We cruise back down from Doi Mae Salong and veer off-road into a landscape of mountain streams, rice terraces and hill tribe villages. A long stretch along the Mae Kok River then takes us toward the city of Chiang Rai, visiting the White Temple before a transfer to the hotel.

Day 8

Today is free to unwind in Chiang Rai. Treat yourself to a Thai massage, explore the city’s main attractions, and shop along the Walking Street.

Day 9

We weave along the backwaters of Chiang Rai Province to reach the famed Golden Triangle, where the borders of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos converge at the confluence of the Mekong River. Trading our bikes for a boat we zip down the river to our hotel in Chiang Saen.

Day 10

Our final ride takes us south along the Mekong River with a few worthwhile detours into the surrounding hills draped by rubber trees. Tonight we toast to our achievement at a farewell dinner in the small border town of Chiang Khong.

Day 11

Our cycling tour has ended but you can extend your adventure with a Mekong River boat cruise in neighboring Laos. A drop off at the border crossing or Chiang Rai Airport for onward flights are included.
