About this Cycle Tour

Cambodian heritage is often linked to the UNESCO-listed temples of Angkor, French colonialism, and the legacies of the Khmer Rouge regime. On this 7-day bike tour, we want to show you that there’s so much more! In the capital, Phnom Penh, we reveal the city’s character beyond its somber reminders of genocide. In the plains of gently flowing rivers, we discover an agrarian world shaped by Buddhist and animist beliefs. And in Siem Reap, the gateway to Angkor, we traverse an ancient landscape of stately temples and hinterlands once ruled by Hindu god-kings, now imbued with rustic rural charm. Each day, we cycle on quiet back roads, immerse ourselves in local life, savor authentic Khmer cuisine, and unwind in cozy hotels.

We meet in Phnom Penh and dive into the city with a rickshaw ride through its backstreets, a visit to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, and a stop at the Royal Palace. The next day, we go island hopping in the Mekong River to discover rural silk weaving villages. Then we head north, exploring hilltop stupas at the former capital of Oudong before taking on red-dirt roads to reach the ancient, jungle-covered ruins of Sambor Prei Kuk. Finally, we arrive in Siem Reap where, cycling on paths perfect for mountain biking, we’ll explore the majestic temples of the once-glorious Khmer Empire, including, of course Angkor Wat, the world’s largest religious monument. We also embark on a sunset boat cruise on the shimmering Tonle Sap Lake, Southeast Asia’s largest freshwater lake famous for its floating villages. The tour ends in Siem Reap following a farewell ride in the countryside.

Itinerary

Day 1

We meet at our tour hotel in Phnom Penh and get acquainted over a welcome lunch. In the afternoon, we pay our respects at the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, enjoy a rickshaw ride through the city’s backstreets, and visit the glittering Royal Palace.

Day 2

A morning of Mekong River island hopping by bike reveals the peaceful Cambodian countryside just beyond the city. We’ll delve into traditional silk production methods and savor a home-cooked lunch in a stilt house.

Day 3

After a quick transfer from Phnom Penh, we cycle on back roads through the rustic countryside to reach Oudong Mountain. We visit hilltop Buddhist stupas of Cambodia’s former capital and then transfer to the sleepy backwater town of Kampong Thom.

Day 4

We ride along the floodplain of the Stueng Saen River to reach Sambor Prei Kuk, an abandoned, ancient city with scattered brick temples nestled in a serene forest. We then transfer to Siem Reap, the “gateway to Angkor”.

Day 5

We discover the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Angkor by bike, cycling on small paths that crisscross the ancient landscape. Visiting the most iconic sites today - Ta Prohm, Bayon and, of course, Angkor Wat – we’ll learn about the enigmatic history of the once-glorious Khmer Empire.

Day 6

We cycle through the countryside surrounding Siem Reap, far away from the touring masses. Our destination is Banteay Srei, a pink-sandstone temple renowned for its intricate carvings.. After lunch, we transfer back to Siem Reap and reconvene for a sunset cruise on the Tonle Sap Lake.

Day 7

A final ride through the countryside takes us to the majestic 9th-century sandstone pyramid of Phnom Bakong. After a farewell lunch the tour ends in Siem Reap.

I had never been on a guided cycle tour and the Cambodia Heritage by bicycle tour exceeded my expectations. Our guide Sophat and driver Thol combined to give us a great tour. Very interesting and informative visits to the key attractions. Good bicycles, excellent support van, regular stops for water, fruit and meals. Well located hotels. Interesting cycle routes off the beaten track, cycling around Angkor Wat etc a great way to see it. Overall highly recommended
