About this Cycle Tour

On this 11-day bike tour across Sabah – a Malaysian state in northern Borneo – we experience a world of fascinating contrasts on Asia’s largest island. By bicycle, we transition from the sandy shores of the Pacific Ocean to the misty highlands of Mount Kinabalu and to the frontiers of untamed jungle. Along the way, we unwind on beautiful beaches, delve into Borneo’s indigenous heritage, and cycle through the oil-palm covered hinterland, all before having a chance to encounter unique wildlife not found anywhere else on earth, including of course the beloved orangutans.

Our journey begins with airport pick-ups in Sabah’s capital, Kota Kinabalu, where we settle in at a stylish beach resort overlooking the South China Sea. We then spend two days cycling towards the northern tip of Borneo before heading east, relishing views over majestic Mount Kinabalu, Southeast Asia’s tallest mountain. Descending from the highlands, we pass through Poring, known for its thermal hot springs and treetop walkway, as well as a stunning tea plantation before arriving at the geographic heart of Sabah. Our route continues to the Kinabatangan River, where we cruise on the meandering waterway, on the lookout for monkeys swinging in the trees and elephants coming to bathe. We then turn our attention fully to Borneo’s iconic primates, visiting a world-renowned orangutan rehabilitation center and a sanctuary for long-nosed monkeys on the Sandakan Peninsula. The tour ends with transfers to Sandakan airport.

Join us in hitting the roads and trails of Borneo and discover a world at the edge of untamed wilderness!

Itinerary

Day 1

The tour meets in Kota Kinabalu (“KK" for short), the capital city of the Malaysian state of Sabah. We will pick you up from the airport and transfer to a resort on Pantai Dalit Beach. In the evening we convene for a trip meeting and welcome dinner.

Day 2

We transfer north and cycle through the forested foothills of the Crocker Range, Sabah's mountainous spine. After lunch at Teringai Beach, we drive to Kota Marudu where we visit an indigenous cultural centre to learn about the unique heritage of the Tobilung people. We spend the night nearby.

Day 3

A transfer brings us further up the Kudat Peninsula where we cycle on gently rolling terrain through rural backwaters and the coast to reach the iconic ‘Tip of Borneo.’ In the afternoon, relax by the beach and watch the sunset where the South China Sea meets the Sulu Sea

Day 4

Following a morning transfer south, we ride through farmlands and the plains of the Wariu River. A leg-testing climb brings us into the highlands, and we transfer to Kundasang, a hill station overlooking Southeast Asia’s tallest mountain, Mount Kinabalu.

Day 5

We ride one of Borneo's best downhills from Kundasang, cycling through the lower slopes of Mount Kinabalu. After a short transfer, we cycle to Poring Hot Springs for a canopy walk, a dip in the thermal waters, and a chance to spot the rare Rafflesia flower.

Day 6

Transitioning from the wilds of Poring to the manicured tea fields of Sabah Tea Garden, we enjoy a point-to-point route featuring farmer paths, steam crossings, and off-road trails. In the afternoon you can participate in a tour of the Sabah organic tea factory.

Day 7

A morning transfer brings us further east where we hit the trails in a region which, during the Second World, bore witness to an infamous death march. We then continue to the geographic ‘Heart of Sabah’ before transferring to a Forestry Department-run rest house in Telupid.

Day 8

After a morning transfer into Sabah’s eastern half, we cycle on paved roads through the well-groomed Bornean countryside filled with palm oil plantations. In the afternoon, we enjoy a cruise down the meandering Kinabatangan River, hoping to spot long-nosed monkeys, saltwater crocodiles, pygmy elephants, and other wildlife along the banks.

Day 9

A day off the bikes to visit a world-renowned orangutan rehabilitation centre for a chance to see these endangered primates eat & play. We also visit the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre and unwind at an ecolodge at the edge of the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve.

Day 10

Another day and another chance to see more primates in the wild! This morning we cycle across the Sandakan Peninsula to the Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary where we can see these blobby-nosed creatures up close. The afternoon is free before a farewell dinner in Sepilok.

Day 11

Transfer to Sandakan Airport for onward flights.
