About this Cycle Tour

Sitting in the Indian Ocean off Africa’s southeast shore, Madagascar is the fourth-largest island on Earth. Tropical rainforests ring the coasts while incredibly vast highlands, plateaus and mountains rise in the interior. Across this terrain lives a totally unique cast of wildlife not found anywhere else, including the world-famous fluffy, wide-eyed lemurs. Equipped with mountain bikes and sturdy hiking shoes, this 15-day adventure traverses Madagascar in search of its most iconic pockets of wilderness.

After meeting in the high-octane capital city of Tana, we transfer south into the Central Highlands and ride through an agrarian world of rice-terraced hillsides. We then descend into the dense jungles of Ranomafana National Park and trek through the natural habitat of golden bamboo lemurs and chameleons. Back in the highlands, we cycle past the tea fields of Sahambavy, meet the ring-tailed lemurs at Anja, and come face-to-face with the towering granite domes of the Andringitra Massif. After transitioning to the Horombe Plateau, we dodge herds of zebu cattle crossing the road to reach the Jurassic sandstone towers of Isalo National Park. A hike here brings us into deep gorges and lush oases where, if we’re lucky, we can spot ‘dancing lemurs’. Finally, we reach the coast for two nights of relaxation on the beaches of Ifaty, where our tour ends.

Join us and take a ride on Madagascar's wild side!

Itinerary

Day 1

We meet at our tour hotel in Antananarivo – or just “Tana” as the locals call it – for a trip briefing and welcome dinner.

Day 2

We drive south and start our bike adventure with a short shake-out ride in Antsirabe. Once a French colonial spa town, today Antsirabe is an energized Malagasy city nestled in the Central Highlands.

Day 3

We cycle a scenic loop in the rolling hills west of Antsirabe. Our route takes us to two crater lakes and through a rural landscape of terraced rice paddies before rolling back into town for a relaxed evening.

Day 4

Today we settle in for a nearly 100 km ride south along RN7, a paved national road cutting through the valleys, hills, and rice paddies of the Central Highlands. Saddling off in Ambositra, we visit a workshop displaying the town’s famous wood carving traditions.

Day 5

After a morning transfer, we take to the bikes and experience a remarkable transition from the highlands to the lush, tropical rainforest of Ranomafana National Park. We are based here for two nights.

Day 6

We go trekking inside Ranomafana National Park, keeping our eyes peeled for families of golden bamboo lemurs — furry, wide-eyed primates that cannot be found in the wild anywhere else in the world.

Day 7

We’re back in the highlands for a fun and bumpy ride to the Sahambavy Tea Estate. This is Madagascar's only commercial tea plantation – the sprawling rows of manicured tea bushes make for a sharp contrast to the otherwise rugged, red-earth terrain.

Day 8

A morning transfer reunites us with the RN7 and we ride through a wide, open landscape from one roadside village to the next. Our destination is the small city of Ambalavao, the gateway to southern Madagascar.

Day 9

We ride into the savannah scattered with huge granite domes and sheer cliffs. En route, we visit the ring-tailed lemurs at the Anja Community Reserve, and a 20 km stretch on gritty trails brings us to the base of the Andringitra Range where we spend the next two nights.

Day 10

Leaving our bikes behind, we venture out on foot to tackle the 10 km hike up and down Chameleon Peak. The trails lead through stone-littered slopes and offer beautiful views over the peaks and valleys of the Andringitra Massif. The afternoon is free to relax at the lodge.

Day 11

In the morning we utilise the support car to fast-track ourselves into the vast savannah of the Horombe Plateau. On the bikes we then race against the sun dipping on the endless horizon to reach the town of Ranohira, the gateway to Isalo National Park.

Day 12

We spend the day hiking inside Isalo National Park, a wild labyrinth of deep gorges, Jurassic sandstone towers, and lush oases. Keep an eye out for 'dancing lemurs' and cool off in hidden natural pools.

Day 13

Back on our bikes we have a short ride along the craggy southern fringes of Isalo National Park. We then settle in for a long and bumpy drive to the beaches of Ifaty where we have two nights at an eco-resort by the sea to look forward to.

Day 14

Based in Ifaty, we have a front-row seat to the turquoise waters of the Mozambique Channel. The day is yours to lounge on the beach or hop in a traditional dugout canoe to head out to the coral reef for some snorkelling before our farewell dinner.

Day 15

Our tour has ended. Extend your stay on the beach or fly back to Tana to connect to your flight home.

Reviews

Excellent guides, drivers and mechanic! The Madagascar road conditions created biking challenges but the guides kept us updated on what to expect and they were awesome! The Spice Roads staff did a lot of "behind the scenes" work to ensure the trip logistics were well taken care . The lunches they prepared were healthy and the daily "snack" breaks were well timed and appreciated. Solufo and all Spice Roads crew members were amazing ! It was a memorable experience. Thank you Spice Roads🤗

this bike and hike adventure exceeded our expectations in all ways. Our guides Solofo and Mahefa and Joju (also the mechanic) were personable and knowledgeable and had our safety and comfort in mind at all times. Our drivers Danny and Jean, were patient and skilled (we have never seen roads quite like the Madagascar roads!). All of the staff were encouraging and fun! The country side is beautiful and changing constantly and all of the people that we met along the way were very friendly
