About this Cycle Tour

This is Thailand’s most popular road cycling journey, and for good reason! There’s nothing quite like gliding along excellently paved roads that snake past tropical shorelines, savoring delicious Thai cuisine, and enjoying the world-renowned hospitality of the Land of Smiles. From the coconut groves and sandy beaches along the Gulf of Thailand, through the ancient rainforest of Khao Sok National Park, and on to the Andaman Coast, road bike touring in Thailand simply doesn’t get better than this.

We meet in Bangkok and whisk ourselves away to the countryside for a gentle warm-up ride leading to the quiet coastal area of Pranburi. From there, we ride south along the Gulf of Thailand shoreline, passing the limestone cliffs of Sam Roi Yot and hopping from one scenic headland to the next. Our route regularly veers inland through an agrarian world of coconut, palm oil and rubber plantations interspersed with exotic fruit orchards. On day 6 we trade white sands for green jungle as we cycle to Khao Sok National Park, home to a massive karst-studded lake and one of the world’s oldest rainforests. After making our way across the peninsula’s hilly spine, we roll down towards the Andaman Sea, soaking in the Old-World charm of Takua Pa, a historic tin-mining town, before planting our feet in the sun-kissed sands of Khao Lak Beach. A final zip down the Andaman Coast leads us to Phuket, where we conclude our ride with the iconic crossing of the Sarasin Bridge. The tour ends with a night in Phuket.

Join us on this legendary road cycling journey from Bangkok to Phuket, where cyclists come for the challenge and fall in love with the charm of Thailand’s coasts!

Itinerary

Day 1

We transfer 2-hours outside of Bangkok and start our coastal ride through a patchwork of salt pans and aquaculture farms. After lunch we transfer to the bustling beach town of Hua Hin where we stay at an elegant resort.

Day 2

We cycle along the Pranburi coast and pass Sam Roi Yot National Park, where craggy limestone peaks tower over the roads. Then, we head back to the shore, ride parallel with railroad tracks, and skirt along a series of bays before reaching the small, seaside town of Klong Wan.

Day 3

Today’s shorter stage is dominated by coconut plantations, and we’ll even visit an organic farm to learn all about the cultivation of this energy-rich fruit. Our ride ends at the golden sands of Baan Grood where we have the afternoon at leisure.

Day 4

Our route today traverses Thailand’s narrowest geographic point, riding along the coast and through a seemingly endless world of coconut and palm oil plantations. We cover over a 100 km but we’ll be rewarded with another secluded and quiet beach retreat to end the day.

Day 5

Today features a long and glorious ride in the lush backwaters of Chumphon Province. After an initial jaunt along the coast we veer inland through plantations and fruit orchards, taking a steady pace as we progressively enter the south of Thailand. We spend the night at a Thai-style upcountry retreat.

Day 6

A milder day brings us further down the peninsula to Laem Sai Beach, a peaceful part of coastal Thailand far off the tourist trail. Highlights of the route include back roads through palm oil plantations and blissful riding along the shoreline

Day 7

Today we trade powdery white sands for the lush green jungle as we cycle inland towards Khao Sok National Park. Along the way we visit an ancient Buddhist temple and weave through palm oil and rubber plantations. Today’s hotel is a short drive from the stunning Cheow Lan Lake.

Day 8

In the morning we ride along the edge of Khao Sok National Park, riding past a lush, karst-studded rainforest before we roll down onto the Andaman coast. We cycle through the historic tin-mining hub of Takua Pa and arrive at the sun-kissed sands of Khao Lak.

Day 9

We depart from Khao Lak and make a stop at a museum dedicated to the impact of the 2004 tsunami. Our ride then takes us over scenic headlands, rolling hills, and along picturesque shorelines before making the iconic crossing over the Sarasin Bridge to the island of Phuket.

Day 10

Our cycling tour has ended but feel free to extend your stay in Phuket or discover more of Thailand.

Reviews

Bangkok to Phuket was a great trip supported by 3 fantastic guides and 3 wonderful drivers. Spice Roads totally delivered. The food was amazing, and often we were often given freedom to choose our own food which was both generous and refreshing. I can not praise highly enough the guides and drivers. Their enthusiasm and organisation was flawless and they accommodated every guests request, whether it be for a massage at 5pm or a beach swim at 2pm. My only negative would be the distances cycled on hard shoulders on fairly major roads. On this trip you cover great distances and for >50% of the trip I'd say it's single file cycling on hard shoulders. Having said that, I'm not actually a cyclist, I'm a person who owns a bike. On this trip I chose the e-bike option (thank goodness). I had previously been in Northern Thailand and was traumatised by the hills there. I decided for this to be a holiday I would hire an e-bike. I was the only e-bike rider, but that didn't matter. I stayed in the middle of the middle paced group and loved it. The bike was superb and each day the drivers changed the battery before I'd realised so I never worried I'd run out of power. I also took a gel seat cover which meant I never once felt any discomfort. This is a great trip to escape the UK winter, and if you get a good group you'll have a wonderful experience.

Great cycling: challenging but doable even for "ordinary" cyclist who are passionate and enthusiast enough. The country is wonderful, the team super supportive in any possible way. You MUST do it is an amazing experience and I have never met on any Spiceroads tour I have taken so far less than amazingly interesting and entertaining fellow cyclists

We had 19 clients of differing abilities, and 3 guides, and the whole thing worked seamlessly. Aum, Aun, and Chet looked after us very well and ensured that the trip went well. If you like long, relatively flat rides, this may be the ride for you. Personally, I found the route rather boring and too much on busy main roads. The food and accommodation were for the most part very good.
