About this Cycle Tour

Mount Kilimanjaro, 'The Roof of Africa', majestically rises above the Tanzanian plains. Its lower reaches are graced with a lush rainforest and coffee farms. In its shadow sprawls the endless East African savannah – the ancestral land of the Maasai people – where elephants roam and lions stalk herds of grazing gazelles. And to the east, the gentle tides of the Indian Ocean wash up against palm-fringed beaches and historic coastal towns. Countless dirt roads radiate across this vast domain, inviting the intrepid mountain biker to get up close and personal with the richness of Tanzanian culture and wilderness.

We begin at a lodge in the western foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, our launchpad for a traverse into the savannah. After an immersive day spent in a village-stye Maasai ecolodge, we venture further east to hike to a waterfall enveloped in thick jungle. We savor fresh Arabica coffee, expertly harvested and brewed by proud Chaggu farmers, before transferring south to Mkomazi National Park. Here we go on a game drive for a hopeful chance to spot endangered black rhinos and wild dogs. Approaching the coast, we’ll delve into the mesmerizing and legend-shrouded Amboni Caves and encounter the azure waters of the Indian Ocean. We then spend our final days riding the backwaters of coastal Tanzania, overnighting in beachside accommodations and discovering vibrant maritime towns steeped in Swahili, Arabic, and colonial history. We ride through Saadani National Park, Tanzania’s only wildlife sanctuary that meets the sea, on a “safari by bike” in the territory of elephants, lions, leopards and buffaloes. The tour ends with a transfer to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s largest city.

Join us on this unforgettable 9-day mountain biking adventure in northeastern Tanzania, and go far beyond safaris and the traditional tourist trails!

Itinerary

Day 1

We meet in the town of Moshi and transfer to our lodge near the western slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. If you need assistance with your pre-tour hotel or airport transfers please let us know.

Day 2

We ride from the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro to the East African savannah, the homeland of the Maasai people. Immersing ourselves in the fascinating lifeways of the Maasai, we spend the night at a village style eco-lodge.

Day 3

We continue on a combination of dirt and paved roads, transitioning from the barren savannah to the fertile southern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. We ride through extensive farmlands cultivated by the Chagga people and end the night at a cozy lodge in the countryside near the town of Moshi.

Day 4

We start the day with a gentle 24 km ride to the edge of Mount Kilimanjaro's rainforest zone. Here we’ll hike to one of Tanzania’s most stunning waterfalls, visit a Chaggu village, and learn all about the process of coffee production from local farmers.

Day 5

A day off-the-saddle. We start with a game drive in Mkomazi National Park for a chance to spot wildlife, including the endangered black rhinos and wild dogs. We then transfer to the coast, breaking up the ride with a visit to the mesmerizing Amboni Caves.

Day 6

We cycle from Tanga to Pangani, two historical trading ports with a blend of Swahili, Arabic and European colonial influences. Crossing the Pangani River by ferry, we’ll then ride to the secluded, white sand beach of Ushongo.

Day 7

We continue south, gunning for Tanzania’s only wildlife reserve bordering the Indian Ocean: Saadani National Park. We ride on a mix of inland and coastal dirt roads, culminating with a “safari by bike” as we enter the National Park, where elephants, buffaloes, lions and leopards roam.

Day 8

We ride out of Saadani National Park and find ourselves, once again, winding on dirt tracks through the backwaters of coastal Tanzania. Our route takes us to Bagamoyo beach for a final night on the Indian Ocean.

Day 9

A morning ride around Bagamoyo leads us to various heritage sites documenting the town’s legacies as a historic trading port. In the afternoon we transfer to Dar es Salaam where the tour ends either at your next hotel or the airport
