About this Cycle Tour

This exhilarating trip through the high altitude mountain region of Ladakh, India, takes you over passes, into remote valleys, alongside glacier–fed rivers, across sand dunes, and through Tibetan villages. This is a Himalayan Odyssey not to be missed!

After arriving on a flight from New Delhi to Leh, we begin the adventure with a 3-day acclimatization loop, gradually adjusting ourselves to the high altitude conditions. We gently cycle along the valley floors in search of vestiges of the ancient Ladakhi Kingdom scattered around the expansive landscape surrounding Leh. Monasteries here are dramatically perched on top of cliffs and etched into the hillside, reflecting the ancient and rich Tibetan Buddhist cultural background of the region.

Once acclimated we will depart Leh and burst up the Warila Pass before cycling through the beautiful Sakti and Nubra Valleys. You will be looking down spectacular gorges and up to snow-capped peaks while getting a true window into life deep in the Himalayas. Traversing the vast and expansive high altitude desert terrain of the Nubra Valley - skirting along rivers and cruising through villages - you will also discover a world of sand dunes, Bactrian camels and star filled nights. The tour ends on the highest note possible: a cycle up (and of course down) the highest motorable road in the world.

Join us and experience the Indian Himalayas by bicycle in a truly unforgettable way.

Itinerary

Day 1

We pick you up from New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) and transfer you to our tour hotel in the city. In the evening, we convene for a trip meeting and welcome dinner.

Day 2

We fly to the Himalayan city of Leh and take it easy as we acclimatise to the change in altitude. Ramble through the small city to visit the abandoned palace and a local market.

Day 3

We cycle gently along the banks of the Indus River to visit scenic Buddhist monasteries — a nice and easy first ride to acclimatise ourselves to the high-altitude conditions.

Day 4

Heading west of Leh today, we will cycle through the Zanskar River gorge and marvel at ancient murals in Alchi.

Day 5

We make our way to Tingmosgang, once the ancient capital of Ladakh, today a sleepy village in a lush valley. It’s a more challenging ride with some longer, steeper ascents and grittier downhills on unevenly paved switchbacks.

Day 6

It’s a rest day back in Leh to ensure we are fully acclimatised before heading north and beginning our ascent into the Nubra Valley.

Day 7

Our journey kicks into high gear as we begin our gradual climb up over the Ladakh Range to reach the Nubra Valley. Today’s leg leads to Sakti, the last village before the mountain pass of Wari La, which we tackle the following day.

Day 8

Today’s challenging climb to the top of Wari La will be rewarded with panoramic views across the Himalayas. The thrilling descent down the other side leads us to the village of Tangyar.

Day 9

Today’s ride takes us down the Shyok Valley, leading to one of the world’s highest-altitude deserts at the village of Hunder.

Day 10

We enter the Nubra Valley, riding past sand dunes and expansive floodplains interspersed with villages, orchards, and groves, in the shadow of the Karakoram mountain range.

Day 11

We drive back into the mountains to settle in near the village of Khardung. Resting at nearly 4,000 metres above sea level at the foot of the Khardung La, we’ll be perfectly placed for our grand finale back to Leh the next day.

Day 12

We’ll meander along switchback roads leading to the top of Khardung La pass — the highest point of our trip and one of the highest motorable roads in the world. After soaking in the amazing views of the valleys and snow-capped peaks, it’s an exhilarating downhill back to Leh.

Day 13

We say goodbye to Ladakh and fly back to New Delhi for the last night of the tour.

Day 14

Transfer to the airport for your flight home or extend your stay in India.

Reviews

We thoroughly enjoyed the trip and look forward to returning to Leh again some time in the near future. Food provided while camping was fantastic. The staff managed to provide a wide variety of meals. Thinles made good suggestions for restaurants. This was preferable to us as we had limited time to explore the town as it was. We felt that the staff managed the split group very well (due to different riding abilities and different expectations from the trip, we were often split into two pairs.) Thinles' work rate was phenomenal!

This was the best team I have had on a SpiceRoads tour. Thinles, the guide was knowledgeable, informative, totally professional on all accounts and a brilliant athlete. The driver, Dashi, and the cook and back up team were excellent. They went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable, well fed, and well cared for when camping at high altitude.

The guide and driver really made this trip for us (as well as the scenery).

Accommodation was suitable for the location. We were camping a lot of the time and the food was superb.

I was impressed that our guide regularly monitored our oxygen levels and pulse rates to make sure we could cope with the changes in altitude.
