About this Cycle Tour

No holiday to South India is complete without a visit to the tropical state of Kerala. Once the heart of the global spice trade, today one of the subcontinent's premier travel destinations, Kerala beckons with a deeply proud culture. With intricate song and dance rooted in the Hindu epics, a Christian legacy that goes back to the time of the Apostles, and a refined vegetarian cuisine that forms the basis of Ayurvedic wellness — all set against a lush landscape of rolling hills, river valleys, and lagoons stretching from the shores of the Arabian Sea — this eight-day bike tour offers a true taste of Kerala’s rich heritage.

Starting from the commercial hub of Kochi, we head into Kerala’s Spice Belt, where pepper and nutmeg groves thrive beside vast estates of rubber trees and pineapple fields. Here, we ride through and taste the bounty of the Keralan countryside before passing through Thrissur to peek behind the curtains of classic theatre at one of the state’s most esteemed academies. We then weave across the rice paddy-covered plains of the Nila River to reach the bustling temple town of Guruvayur, one of the South’s holiest Hindu pilgrimage sites. Finally, we reach the Malabar Coast, cycling past towering palm trees and spending a night at Cherai Beach before rolling into Fort Kochi via the scenic backwaters. We round off our adventure with an exploration of Fort Kochi’s centuries-old cosmopolitan charm. The tour ends in Kochi.

Itinerary

Day 1

We meet near Kochi airport and drive into Kerala’s ‘Spice Belt’, a fertile rural region where ancient spices like nutmeg, pepper and ginger thrive alongside vast estates growing rubber trees and pineapples. Here we base ourselves at a plantation homestay and explore the countryside by bike.

Day 2

Today we enjoy a lovely ride to the banks of the Periyar River. Highlights include visiting India’s largest pineapple market and cycling on quiet roads past rice paddies and rubber plantations. The afternoon is free to relax at the riverside resort or visit the Paniyeli Poru Rapids nearby.

Day 3

We journey between the valleys of the Periyar and Chalakudy Rivers. Along the way we visit an elephant rescue centre, cycle across rolling hills clad in teak trees, and walk across a suspension bridge. We spend the night at a tranquil nature retreat inspired by the principles of Ayurveda.

Day 4

In the morning we cycle across the Malabar Plain filled with lively communities and markets surrounding expansive rice paddies. In the afternoon we trade the quiet for the bustle of Thrissur, zipping by tuk-tuk to visit Kerala’s tallest church and one of its most revered Hindu temples.

Day 5

Today’s theme is all about Kerala’s rich heritage of dance and theatre which we witness first-hand at one of the state’s most esteemed academies. Following a traditional vegetarian lunch we ride to Ottapalam, a laid-back town along the Nila River renowned as a major filming location for Malayalam cinema.

Day 6

We begin our transition from the Kerala Midlands to the Malabar Coast, riding past the rice paddies that sprawl along the plains of the mighty Nila River. We spend the night in the temple town of Guruvayur, one of India’s most revered places of worship dedicated to Lord Krishna.

Day 7

Weaving our way to the coast, we ride past a beautiful church founded by St Thomas in the 1st century AD. A long stretch of side roads through coconut groves then leads us to Cherai Beach, where we relax between the Arabian Sea to the west and a scenic lagoon to the east.

Day 8

We cycle through the backwaters of Kerala and cross to Fort Kochi by ferry. Exploring this charming historic maritime town by bike is the perfect way to draw our adventure to a close. The tour ends with lunch in Fort Kochi.
