About this Cycle Tour

Cycling and Japanese hot spring (onsen) culture are a match made in heaven. And there’s no better place to experience this synergy than Kyushu, an island in the southern Japanese Archipelago, celebrated for its rich heritage of traditional onsen. This 6-day traverse across northeast Kyushu leads us on backcountry roads through rice fields, along rivers, up mountain passes, and to historic temples and cultural landmarks as we connect a string of onsen towns by bike.

Beginning in Fukuoka, Kyushu's urban hub, we head east and begin cycling from one of Japan’s most prominent Shinto shrines to reach Hita via farmlands, the Chikugo River, and forested hills. The following two days will involve more ascents and descents as we tackle the Fushiki Pass, once a part of the “Kaido” highway, and trace the slopes of volcanic Mount Futago to reach the coast of the Kunisaki Peninsula. Our last riding day leads us to Beppu, one of Japan’s onsen meccas, where we finish the tour. The cycling is complemented by plenty of cultural highlights, such as one of Japan’s oldest wooden temples (Fuki-ji) and smallest Samurai castles (Kitsuki).

Join us as we bike & soak our way across Kyushu!

Meet in Fukuoka, Kyushu’s urban hub, for a welcome dinner and trip briefing.

Day 2

Following a transfer to Dazaifu, we explore its revered Shinto shrine and saddle up. We leisurely ride along country roads, passing through farmlands, rivers, and forested hills. Our ride concludes in Hita, famed for its hot springs and well-preserved Edo-era merchant houses.

Day 3

This morning we ascend to the Fushiki Pass along the historic "Kaido Highway”. Following a thrilling downhill, a stretch along the Yamakuni River, and another smaller pass, we reach the town of Usa where we can explore its impressive Shinto shrine.

Day 4

Today we reach the sea by traversing the Kunisaki Peninsula from west to east! We ride along quiet highland roads leading up and down Mount Futago, visit one of Japan’s oldest wooden temples, and are greeted by the Seto Inland Sea as we arrive in the town of Kunisaki.

Day 5

Our final ride takes us along an undulating inland route south to Beppu, one of Japan’s most famous onsen towns. Along the way we cross small streams and visit the historic town of Kitsuki, home to an impressive samurai castle. In Beppu, indulge in a celebratory onsen soak!

Our tour was superb, above and beyond what we expected. The ride guide and the support team were friendly and knowledgeable, committed to our tour being a fabulous experience. The food exceeded expectations, and it seemed that every detail was attended to. Our guide shared interesting details at various stops and at local points of interest. The description and difficulty of the ride on the website matched our experience. I look forward to another trip with SpiceRoads!
