About this Cycle Tour

Vietnam’s Central Coast is a stunning fusion of elements where the Annamite Mountains meet the South China Sea. Pedal along tranquil routes through lush rice fields, past crashing surf on pristine beaches, over challenging mountain passes, and to untouched seaside refuges, exploring layers of history from the Hindu Cham civilization down through the Nguyen dynasty and the war years. You will experience the prosperity and dynamism of the thriving new Vietnam, rest at cozy hotels, and savor meals shoulder to shoulder with the locals.

Our journey begins with an elegant ride in Hue, Vietnam’s capital under the feudal Nguyen dynasty, replete with meticulously-crafted palaces, tombs and gardens designed by geomancers in this serene countryside. Riding south, we witness the awesome scale of Vietnamese fisheries and aquaculture amid a surreal background of jagged jungle-covered mountains jutting high over topaz saltwater lagoons. Soaring above Da Nang on the iconic Hai Van Pass, we enjoy an exhilarating descent and plunge into the exotic atmosphere of Hoi An, redolent with the legacy of the spice and silk trades that continue to shape its identity. We cycle to My Son, the capital of the ancient Hindu Cham civilization, then follow seaside roads into rustic villages on a rugged coastline that sparks the imagination and tests the legs. A visit to the memorial site of the My Lai massacre will connect us to the war years and the ferocious conflicts that consumed this region within living memory. We fittingly relax at the end of the trip with a stay on Whale Island, a sparkling ocean paradise where we can soak in the unmarred natural beauty and truly kick back after our days in the saddle.

Join us on this immersive and stimulating bike trip through Central Vietnam, a feast for the body, mind and spirit!

Itinerary

Day 1

You are picked up from your hotel in Hue this morning to meet your guide and set off on a bike ride along the scenic Perfume River around the Nguyen Dynasty’s capital. We see the majestic Thien Mu Pagoda, tombs of emperors, and Vietnam’s own Forbidden City.

Day 2

We ride along canals to a more isolated region studded with grandiose mausoleums for ancestors, pagodas, and fishing villages. We arrive at the impressive Dam Cau Hai Coastal Lagoon, Vietnam’s largest, then make our way over a couple of climbs to arrive at the beautiful Lang Co Beach Resort.

Day 3

Ride out of the resort and challenge yourself with the iconic Hai Van Pass for superb views of the coast. After lunch in the vibrant city of Da Nang, continue on country roads to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hoi An. Tonight, explore the many sights of this ancient port.

Day 4

We ride along the Thu Bon River and through its lush ecosystem to My Son, the mountain valley capital of the ancient Cham. After lunch and exploration of the temples on foot, return to Hoi An by transfer to relax or see more of the town before gathering for dinner.

Day 5

Cycle from Hoi An with views over the estuary, then pedal south to a pretty beach village for seafood lunch and swimming. We transfer to My Lai, site of the wartime massacre by American troops, for a guided tour. Arrive at our idyllic resort via a short transfer.

Day 6

We transfer out of Quang Ngai and begin a diverse ride along rolling coastline, rice paddy fields, salt flats, and fishing villages, with a typical local lunch on the way. Our ride ends overlooking Quy Nhon, a historic and thriving city. Enjoy exploring the lively waterfront this evening!

Day 7

Transfer out of Quy Nhon to ride an isolated river valley with gently rolling terrain and beautiful views of the highland foothills. We emerge from the valley to winding coastal trails and roads and ride directly to our modern hotel in the sparkling seaside town of Tuy Hoa.

Day 8

Leaving Tuy Hoa by bicycle, we cycle along vast beaches, then begin a fascinating series of climbs and descents into hidden fishing ports. Take in stellar views over Vung Ro Bay and embrace the challenge of the Ca Pass. Tonight we arrive at the natural paradise of Whale Island Resort.

Day 9

This is a freeflow day to relax and enjoy all Whale Island has to offer. Head out on the water with a kayak or catamara, explore the coral with a snorkel, or hike the island’s scenic trails. We gather tonight for a delicious final night dinner to celebrate our journey!

Reviews

Really such an incredible experience–getting to cycle through villages and more remote areas allowed us to witness more of the day-to-day life in Vietnam (and eat so much delicious food!). Highly recommend the experience and this particular tour.

Travelling from the cities and through the villages; seeing Vietnam through its past & present. From farming and fishing methods, the warmth and friendliness of the people. A shout "Hello!" as we cycled by houses & schools. An uplifting and inspiring trip, I can truly say "I experienced Vietnam!" Thank you!

I feel like I have seen the Vietnam that people don't typically see, riding small roads through rice paddies and villages. Eating at small restaurants for lunch and really feeling like I was part of the culture. We were lucky to be in a small group… just the two of us.. they really will run trips with just two people, it is great! Grab a friend and sign up!! Our guide Tho was excellent. He had a deep knowledge of the history, culture, people and food. I can't speak highly enough of him. Our driver Nam was so nice, accomodating and thoughtful. The van and bikes were brand new. You have to be in good shape to do the riding (spin classes helped me) but it was definitely worth it!
