Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai by Bike

Ride on trails and back roads that have little traffic through the spectacular limestone mountains of Chiang Dao and to the scenic village of Mae Salak, straddling the Mae Kok River. Start cycling from Bua Thong waterfall through the forest on a trail cut by elephants. The next day visit the Chiang Dao caves before riding among soaring limestone cliffs on a mixture of dirt paths cut by local hill tribes. The third morning we ride from a temple retreat and later follow the Mae Kok river to the town of Mae Salak. The last day we ride an off road trail and then change vehicles to a boat as we hitch a ride on a long-tail boat. You can also spend some time on an elephant before we get back on the bikes and head to Chiang Rai.

Day 1

Pick up from hotel and start riding from Bua Thong waterfall along country back roads before cutting off road and riding an elephant trail to the resort near Chiang Dao.

Day 2

Visit Chiang Dao caves and then ride through rice fields among soaring limestone cliffs before hitting dirt roads cut by local hill tribes -- the Akha, Lisu, Lau and Palaung people.

Day 3

Ride to Tub Tao Caves and temple retreat and continue cycling on back roads through small villages before lunching in Fang. A flat afternoon ride takes us to the small town of Mae Salak and our riverside resort.

Day 4

From the resort we ride to a Lakhu village then hitch a ride on a long-tail boat (with our bikes) downriver and cycle off road to Ban Ruamitr. Have a ride on an elephant before cycling to Chiang Rai.

• Win was just a wonderful guide who explained everything beautifully, assisted where ever possible, kept us safe and provided a wonderful travelling guide. He took my partners peanut allergy very seriously and always made us feel so safe on the roads, we loved the way he could slightly change plans without any fuss if we decided to go see something that was happening along the way. Our driver was so safe and always there at our rest stops ready with cold towels, food and drinks...and a lovely smile. We were very lucky to have a trainee guide, Tony, along with us on this personal tour. Tony had wonderful English and was keen to learn. We are sure with a little time and experience on the road as a tour guide he will prove a great team member. Win just made our experience something that we will remember forever and if the chance comes along again we will be taking another spice roads tour!! • Tour guides ( they couldn't have been better ) and the two drivers were perfect ! Nothing was too much trouble for all of them and they looked after us very well. We all really appreciated the fresh fruit / soft drinks and the 'wet wipes' that accompanied us during the rides, all very welcome when one is hot and sweaty. The hotels were also generally 'adequate to good', the restaurants / food were always excellent! It was an experience that I will never forget and I am sure I will be back on another Spiceroads Tour !
