About this Cycle Tour

This Vietnam bicycle tour brings you on a journey to a new side of Ha Long Bay. Starting from Red River out of Hanoi city, we cycle to the famous UNESCO world heritage site of Ha Long Bay to tour and take in the unbelievable views. We cruise on crystal clear water to beautiful Cat Ba island and visit one of the world's biosphere reserves, Cat Ba National Park. Here we'll be treated to green jungle and beautiful scenery. We spend the night on the beach before we cycle along the coast to meet our next boat. This one takes us to the newly discovered Thien Long cave before we head back to Hanoi. Beginning in Hanoi, this bicycle tour offers a perfect mix of must see and off the beaten track experiences.

Day 1

Transfer out of the city for a nice, easy cycling on a dyke of the Red River towards Bac Ninh. Cycling through rural villages we finish our riding in the early afternoon and transfer to our overnight in Ha Long city.

Day 2

A morning cruise through Ha Long Bay on a traditional junk will give time to enjoy the beautiful scenery. Once we dock on Cat Ba Island we are back on the bikes for a ride through Cat Ba National Park.

Day 3

We follow the coast and ride past fishing villages to Cai Vieng Pier. Then in a sampan cruise through a mangrove forest to Thien Long Cave found in 1998. Our third boat ride takes us in a ferry to Hai Phong for our return to Hanoi.

Excellent combination of biking and visiting sites. Great food on the boat trip

We really enjoyed Cat Ba Island and all that the toured involved there. Our guide was considerate to our needs as a group, I was the weakest in the group as I have been recovering from back injury but he checked up on me often and was full of encouragement.

Our guide, Mr Cuong, was outstanding – just a great person. He clearly has lots of experience and looked after us very well. Everything was taken care of quietly and calmly. Each step of the way he explained what was happening next. He would periodically point out interesting things or offer explanations of what we were seeing.

Mr. Cuong found the right balance of being formal in his role as guide and being friendly. We asked him numerous questions about what we were seeing and many broader questions about Vietnam. Mr. Cuong’s conversation was really interesting, thoughtful and wide ranging. It was a pleasure to spend time together and his good company really added to our enjoyment of the trip. Please pass on our sincere thanks and our best wishes to Mr. Cuong.

Cycling through the villages was just great – beautiful and interesting little lanes that you could never see any other way. It was such a good way to see the countryside – fishing ponds, gardens, cows, buffalo and chickens, and the glimpses of the Red River. When we stopped at a temple along the way we were incredibly lucky as there was a ceremony to the river god going on, with people dancing in ceremonial costumes and a ceremonial boat was launched on the Red River.

Ha Long bay is wonderful. People worry about it being polluted or too crowded. Maybe in the high season, but even so, it is extraordinary. Cat Ba Island has the same geological features and is just green and lovely to ride through. We really enjoyed climbing through the forest to the top of Ngu Lam Mountain. Just lovely.

Another lovely ride across the island to a great little café where we had the best stir fried noodles of our visit to Vietnam - perhaps the best I have ever eaten. The scenery on the boat ride up river was great and we really enjoyed winding our way through the mangrove forest to the Thien Long cave. We got back to Hanoi late afternoon which was perfect.

Thanks Spice Road. Keep up the great work.
