About this Cycle Tour

This tour is a wonderful way to explore the area known as Sop Ruak, the official centre of the Golden Triangle - which is where the Nam Ruak and Mekong rivers meet. This area has for centuries been the crossroads for border trade between Thailand, Burma and Laos. Located in Chiang Rai province, the most northerly of all the 77 Thai provinces, the Golden Triangle itself is steeped in history and did not become part of Thailand until the 1880s.

Day 1

Upon arrival in Chiang Rai we visit the Opium Museum before get on the saddle for a scenic loop through the countryside and visit seasonal fruit plantations.

Day 2

Today we have more challenging ride along the Mekong River towards Chiang Khong and our lodge in the midst of a Hmong village.

Day 3

We complete our loop and cycle west towards Chiang Rai on small country roads, through rice fields and orchards and sleepy villages and stop to visit the White Temple outside Chiang Rai.

Our guide Ton was excellent - his English was very good and he did not stop supplying us with great info about where we were, local history and customs etc He was enthusiastic and always made sure we were all enjoying our ride. The accommodation was excellent with the Hmong tribe village accommodation a big unexpected highlight for me.

My wife and I had a great time! Our guide and the driver adjusted their support to our pace and also accommodated others who rode a bit farther and faster. The hotels and meals were even better than I expected.

Beautiful landscape. At times, the terrain was challenging but we enjoyed pushing ourselves. We highly recommend Mr. Win as guide and Mr. Sak as driver, both of whom made this trip such an enjoyable experience. The hospitality, view, and room itself at the Lanjia lodge were highlights as was the visit to the opium museum. Mr. Win changed the schedule a bit so we visited the opium museum as our first activity. We thought this was an excellent decision because it gave us a nice historical context for the rest of the trip.
