Cycling Lhasa to Kathmandu

Follow the Friendship Highway through some of the most amazing landscape on Earth. We'll pass small Tibetan settlements, nomadic herdsmen wandering across the wide arid plains and awe-inspiring mountain peaks. Equally as fascinating is the wealth of cultural interest and we will have plenty of opportunity to explore, both in Lhasa and the other towns we pass through on our journey to Kathmandu.

Please note that Tibet issued a new visa policy in May, 2012 requiring that all groups must be a minimum of 4 persons with the same nationality. Please contact us for more information regarding this new policy.

Day 1

We'll meet in Kathmandu where we check the bikes and verify all is in order to get our Tibet visas in the morning. We walk to dinner where we'll discuss more about the tour.

Day 2

While we apply for your visas you will have free time to explore some local trails with bikes and enjoy Kathmandu's temples, monasteries and culture.

Day 3

In the morning we will transfer to the airport for the hour-long flight to Lhasa. This spectacular flight will take us right across the main Himalayan range and provides us with magnificent mountain views. After landing it is a two-hour drive to Lhasa where we will check in to the hotel to rest and begin acclimatizing.

Day 4

Today we'll visit the main sites of Lhasa, including the Potala Palace. We'll then explore Barkor - a maze of narrow cobbled streets that is the central market of Lhasa and the Drepund Monastery.

Day 5

Today we will make sure our bikes are in working order by going for a warm up ride around the city. Meet in evening for a traditional Tibetan dinner.

Day 6

Today we start our drive and bike journey from Lhasa. Traveling by jeep we stop at Khamba La pass (4794m/15728 ft) with stunning views of Yamdrok Lake. We start cycling here and ride along the lake to the west and camp near a large fishing village.

Day 7

After breakfast we start with a transfer up to the top of Karo La pass (5010 m/16437 ft) where we are treated to the spectacular sight of a huge glacier Today we'll pass through beautiful valleys and colorful Tibetan villages. We camp just before the village of Gyantse.

Day 8

We take the morning off the bikes to visit the Gyantse Dzong and Kumbum monastery. We drive and bike to Shigatse for lunch and then visit Tashilumpo Monastery.

Day 9

We start the day climbing to the top of Tso La pass at 4520 m/14829 ft and then there's a fantastic downhill on a paved road. Here you'll notice that the land is more fertile and the village people will be curious about the foreigners biking through.

Day 10

We start our day with a drive up to Gyatso La pass which at 5220 m/ 17125 ft is the highest pass of the tour. Today we'll do some great off road riding, mostly downhill, to Tashizhong. Then it's a short transfer to Rongbok, at 5000 m/16404 ft, our highest overnight of the trip.

Day 11

If the weather cooperates you should have perfect views of Mt. Everest in the morning. Everest Base Camp is just 8 km away and we ride up for a visit. On our return we have an option of taking a great trail for biking to our overnight camp.

Day 12

Today is a full day of biking through Tibetan villages, grasslands, with views of ruins of forts in the distance and houses and Himalayas.

Day 13

A tough start of the day with two passes - Lalung La (4850 m/15912 ft) and Yarle Shung La (5050 m/ 16568 ft) but an easy end with a descent all the way to our basic guesthouse.

Day 14

On this day we are biking all the way down from 3700 m/12139 ft to the Nepal border and the Friendship Bridge at 1800 m/5905 ft. We then drive to Kathmandu to celebrate our final day with a farewell dinner in Thamel.

Day 15

Morning free in Kathmandu until onward travel.
